Can you believe it was only in 2004 that the first african american actress won the Tony for Best Actress in a play?! That actress would be Phylicia Rashad for her portrayal as Lena Younger in A Raisin in the Sun. Rashad completed a journey started by Claudia McNeil more than four decades ago in the first production of Lorraine Hansberry’s iconic play. “Often I’ve wondered what does it take for this to happen. And now I know. It takes effort and grace, tremendous self-effort and amazing grace.” – Phylicia Rashad
